Please tell us what is a typical business day for you?
A typical business day at the salon..
From the moment I open the salon I go into over drive since clients are usually booked days in advance.
I hate starting my day with no clients.
I live breathe and dream hair, that is making my clients feel the best they can be..and empowered.

What made you start the business and what steps did you take to start operating as a business?
What made me start hairdressing in the first place was quite odd. I always tell people I didn't find hairdressing it found me, life as a black boy in the 70s was daunting to say the least.
I figured since institutional racism showed it's ugly head in the school system, my youthful mind told me clearly so will it be in cooperate UK. One day while sitting at Splinters international hair  salon in Mayfair waiting  for my girlfriend, overwhelmed with the fact that it was a black business I immediately ask for a job. Needless to say the following day I started my apprenticeship.

After five years having rose to the top of my field I collaborated with two other  liked minded black friends a Banker and an Accountant we opened the upscale Derek Clement salon in maid a Vale.

What would you say has been your greatest accomplishment in the business world to date?
My greatest accomplishment in the business to date has got to be, besides being nominated as the first top Afro hairstylist of the year in 1980s, is owning my own Product line.

What has been your biggest challenge in business so far?
My Biggest challenge happened in March 14th 2014 2am in the morning at my cousins birthday party I had a phone call to say that my salon was on fire, the next day I was homeless and jobless.

What are your future plans for the business?
Future plans will be to open a one stop shopping salon for men and women of colour. A brand with Academy salon product and restaurant under one roof.

If you had to do it all over again, what would you do differently?
If I had to do it again I would have purchased a high street property in the 1980s and not waste all that money in a house in suburbia and paying rent on the I'm high streets.

What’s the best compliment you could receive in business?
Best compliment could receive in the business is when a white women ask for her hair to be cut like her black Friend. This happened to me on New York while working on Lexxington Avenue Manhattan in the cooperate environment I did many sisters hair with amazing haircuts and their white friends would come for cuts too having seen theirs.

Why is it so important to inspire the next generation  to follow their dreams?
Somebody showed me the way therefore it is incumbent that I pass on the skill relevant to empower future black boys and girls with their woes and quandaries.

What advice would you give to somebody who wants to start a business in your industry?
I am always giving sharing and coaching the young and my advice to the young and coming hair dresses is to start their line if products asap.

What or who inspires you in business and why?
Winston Isaacs was and still is my biggest inspiration. He was humble giving and patient, he aimed high and continued to seek knowledge above all he began what is today, the highest level of black hair we can imagine in the UK AND The cutting of Afro hair that demonstrated  balance movement and Shape.

What is your favourite inspirational quote?
Power In Your Hair Cut, Good health = Healthy Hair And HAIR GROWS AT A CELLULAR LEVEL.

SAVE THE DATE Introducing @Bar Beauty Boutique Launch Event 2nd July 2015

Press Release
June 2015

Women Of Colour (WOC) have been short changed for a long time when trying to locate cosmetics, hair and beauty products that are formulated for our colouring, hair and skin type.   While the position has improved in recent years and the large cosmetic houses are finally waking up to the fact that WOC are BIG spenders in the hair and beauty industry, we still cannot find everything under one roof. Mintel and Nielsen studies have documented that African American women spend 9 times more on beauty products  than any other ethnic group. In the UK  Afro-Caribbean women spend 6 times more on beauty products than any other ethnic group. Globally, buying power in 2015 is projected to be S1.1trillion!

Although some Boots and Superdrug stores stock a very limited range of cosmetics for the WOC e.g. Sleek Cosmetics or Olive Oil Relaxer, this is an intermittent feature which is appreciated but more effort needs to be made. Our Caucasian counterparts on the other hand can pretty much walk into any Boots or Superdrug for their budget cosmetic needs and EVERY department store for their premium beauty lines.

The current trend for all things natural shows no sign of waning and WOC are embracing their culture and heritage in the knowledge that their natural hair is far from ugly and unruly and dark skinned women can be beautiful.

However, skincare, bath/body and hair products specifically formulated for WOC with natural curly and kinky hair are so rare on the high street that entrepreneurial WOC have taken to their kitchens and made their own. Many were also suffering from illnesses, ailments, hair and skin conditions caused by using products containing harsh chemicals, additives and preservatives and made the conscious decision to make their own products using natural ingredients.

Many of these women have gone on to form businesses initially selling to family and friends, but it has been noted that the general consumer often has difficulty locating the  products as many are only available online (and can get lost in cyberspace) or at natural hair/beauty events. It has also been observed that WOC need to know that brands are not just selling to them but are genuinely interested in WHO they are. Accordingly, brands are selling to WOC but the dots are not joined.

We want a store that caters for all our beauty needs

WOC declare

·         We can’t find cosmetics particularly foundations easily on the High Street
·         We can’t find hair products specifically for our natural hair easily on the High Street
·         The products exist online not in a physical tangible location
·         We can’t find professional upmarket locations as easily as our Caucasian counterparts
·         Most events for natural hair and beauty products are not for us and make us feel uncomfortable
·         Why don’t we have a beauty- retail establishment  where you can try, test and chat in a friendly environment

Well this is all set to change if Lorraine James and her @Bar business partners have their way. They have created a one stop beauty shop for the WOC and form a platform for the entrepreneur by providing a retail location and marketing for their brands.

@Bar Beauty Boutique is a store that you can walk into and test the products before buying. We are aware that buying a product that you are not familiar with online can be a very expensive purchase if you cannot return the product for example if the colour match is wrong or you just don’t like the smell of a beauty product.

Join Us for an evening of beauty shopping and cocktails!

2Inspire Business Profile: Fresh Therapies - The UK's First Natural Nail Polish Remover

In this business profile The 2Inspire Network meets Nicola Dickinson the founder of Fresh Therapies Ltd, the first UK-Made natural nail polish remover. We were so excited to meet Nicola and find out about her business, we hope you enjoy this interview.

Please tell us what is a typical business day for you?
I work in my home run salon from Wednesday to Friday.  But when I’m not doing treatments the rest of the time is spent working on my product business.
I’m usually at my desk by 7.30am.  That’s not too difficult as I work from home. I try to keep all meetings to Mondays & Tuesdays.
I usually make a To Do List the night before.
Fullfilling orders gets done first.  Then I’m onto my email list, phone calls and researching for new clients.  I keep an eye on Twitter throughout the day too, as I gain many contacts from here.
My monthly goal planner board is kept a check on every day too.
After some family time at evening meal I’m back at the desk keeping people updated on my business Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn pages.
Then start again with the next day’s To Do List.

What made you start the business and how did you get started?
I wanted to use a natural nail polish remover in my treatments in my home run salon and I couldn’t find one.  So I decided that I would find a company to make one for me.
I approached Business Link and had a chat with them regarding the next steps to take and started my research. Once I found a company that could help with making my formula the company had got it’s legs and was off.

What would you say has been your greatest accomplishment in the business world to date?
Being able to say that my product is the first one to be made in the UK

What has been your biggest challenge in business so far?
Having to find a new manufacturer within the UK before my stock ran out. After my first manufacturers took a different direction.  This took me three months

What are your future plans for the business?
The goal is to have a complete hand, foot and body care range within 5 years.  With more of an international and department store  presence.

If you had to do it all over again, what would you do differently?
I would have done a more indepth business plan. Made my goals more defined and asked a lot more questions of the people I was working with in certain project areas. Don’t be scared of people saying no.

Why is it so important to inspire young women in particular to follow their dreams?
You’re only young once, you really have to make it count.  Don’t get to a stage in your life and have to think If Only or What If. It’s your dream and no one can or will live it for you.  Do what makes you happy and everything else fits in.

What advice would you give to somebody who wants to start a business in your industry?
Research, Research and Research.  Get as much training and experience as you can. Always ask questions and choose one or two people not family who you can confide in.  You need to off load with someone you can trust 100%

What or who inspires you in business and why?

People who walk their talk, and those that really show passion for what they do and are willing to share and give back.

What is your favourite inspirational quote?
Feel the fear and do it anyway.  The title of the great book by Susan Jeffers

Business Profile: Nadia Arain of Secret Paradise Spa

Secret Paradise is a Luxury Day Spa based in Hendon, North London that offers a wide variety of classic spa treatments including threading, waxing, nails, body wraps & scrubs, facials, massages, tanning, brow & lash tinting and extensions. Secret Paradise will be holding a pamper corner at the 2inspire Ladies Day on the 9th March 2012.

1/ Please tell us what is a typical business day for you?
A typical business day is dealing with clients, booking, attending meetings and leading staff.

2/ What made you start the business and what steps did you take to start operating as a business?
I love working for myself and it took courage and fearlessness to start operating. I needed to source the right location, staffing and products to put it all together.

3/ What would you say has been your greatest accomplishment in the business world to date?
Being a young business owner. Having no previous business experience and creating a successful spa from scratch was one of the toughest things ever and I feel that is my biggest accomplishment.

4/ What has been your biggest challenge in business so far?
Attracting clients into the spa on a regular basis and retaining them.

5/What are your future plans for the business?
To build upon the existing systems and scale the business into more branches!

6/If you had to do it all over again, what would you do differently?
I would REALLY research everything in-depth and not leave it ad-hoc because it is how you lose business and how I lost MAJOR business in my first year.

7/ What’s the best compliment you could receive in business?
"You changed my life and inspired me to take control of it"

8/ What advice would you give to somebody who wants to start a business in your industry?
Price yourself for profit. If your price isn't correct, you'll never profit. Also, your team has to be outstanding. The wrong person on your team often means shutting down the business.

9/What or who inspires you in business and why?
My business coaches. They are very successful women and without their help, my business wouldn't be HALF the business it is.

10/What is your favourite inspirational quote?
Life is a bitch. You gotta go out and kick ass -- Maya Angelou
