2Inspire Profile: Sharon Lowe founder of The Pure Emporia

"It is the essence of genius to make use of the simplest ideas"-Charles Peguy. This motivational quote is applicable to mumpreneur Sharon Lowe. Her inquisitive nature led her to develop a simple query about modern lifestyle choices into an award winning natural skin care Company: ThePureEmporia.

Please tell us what is a typical business day for you?
I don’t really have a typical day. I have a 10month old boy so my day really is based around his needs. I have set goals for each day of the week i.e when to blog, tweet, process orders, write articles etc. My working day happens when he is either asleep, when he is happy playing, when he’s with his granny/daddy or at night when he has gone to bed.

What made you start the business and how did you get started?
A few years ago I was wondering why so many people that I knew were poorly. Over a bottle of wine my husband and I were discussing what we’re doing now that we didn’t do 30 years ago. One of the topics was skincare. Whilst having my evening shower I looked at my shower gel and couldn’t understand any of the ingredients. I Googled them and found some were irritating but some were even cancer causing. I did many months of research into ingredients. It is deemed safe for these ‘nasty’ ingredients as they are in such small quantities but a typical woman uses about 12 products per day; shower gel, shampoo, deodorant, make-up , hand wash etc. and what does that equate to over a life time? I realised that only 3% of a ‘natural’ products ingredients needed to be natural, the rest could be made up of anything. I didn’t like this and so set about making a website that sold only products that were ‘nasty’ chemical free. I created a database of ingredients and when I got to over 4,000 I decided to launch thepureemporia.com

What would you say has been your greatest accomplishment in the business world to date?
We have received 3 national business awards already which has been great but even better than this was when a mother phoned me to tell me that her 4 year old had stopped using steroids for his Eczema which he had been using since a baby after he started using our products.

What has been your biggest challenge in business so far?
Combining business with a baby and coping when sleep deprived!

What are your future plans for the business?
To grow, to launch our own range and to sell even more internationally.

If you had to do it all over again, what would you do differently?
I would keep my purse strings tighter and I would seek help and advice on things like my website. Although I think this is a massive learning curve for any new business.

Why is it so important to inspire young women in particular to follow their dreams?
Everyone should be able to support themselves. The trend to want to be a wag is not helping anyone, particularly young girls. You can’t gain self esteem and confidence if you are only seen as someone’s other half. Girls can do it for themselves! People need to have their own money in order to have some ‘say’ in their lives.

What advice would you give to somebody who wants to start a business in your industry?
For any industry you need to do your research and learn all that you can about social media.

What or who inspires you in business and why?
Jacqueline Gold – she has risen in a mans world. And made something huge and popular out of something that was seen to be seedy.
What is your favourite inspirational quote?
“If you don’t dream it, you won’t do it” or something like that – basically allow yourself to dream of something great and go after it.

2Inspire Profile: Chita Mumba - Mobile Hairdresser

Chita Mumba, is an inspiring example for young women who want to become self employed. While Job hunting, she decided to explore her talents, resulting in the formation of her hair business. Her story illustrates the importance of gaining inspiration from within.

Please tell us what is a typical business day for you? A typical business day involves me travelling to a customers house, either to braid, undo or style their hair. Usually takes between 1-6 hours depending on what style they have requested.

What made you start the business and how did you get started? I started the business when friends saw how well I braided my own hair and they wanted me to do theirs. And because at the time I was job hunting I thought why not do this in the mean time. We'll its turned out to be something I am taking seriously. Building a brand, organizing events and workshops round natural hair, beauty and lifestyle.

What would you say has been your greatest accomplishment in the business world to date?  Receiving a Start up loan from the government to help build my brand.

What has been your biggest challenge in business so far? Fear of failure, and struggles with lack of confidence which have sometimes hindered me from marketing effectively etc.

What are your future plans for the business?
Finally hold the events I have been planning, open a retail beauty supply store, become renowned for passionately serving my customers, and become a global brand.

If you had to do it all over again, what would you do differently?  Nothing at all, I have enjoyed the journey.

Why is it so important to inspire young women in particular to follow their dreams?
We hold up half the sky, have you heard of that term before? It implies that we too have a responsibility to make the world a better place and I believe it starts with dreaming then execution. Dreams also keep us alive and prevent from just merely existing. And when we dream we must dream, big, and when we do so as young women, we grow, develop and become amazing role models and that's what matters the most.

What advice would you give to somebody who wants to start a business in your industry? Work hard, find ways to learn more, make sure you have a unique selling point and get to know your market.

What or who inspires you in business and why?
Daren Dixon, he runs a branding and talent agency and he is doing big things. He talks about coming from a very hard place but never giving up in order to achieve his dreams. Plus he is down to earth, willing to share and he has lots of confidence. He is currently my business crush, lol. And many successful businesswomen I have met in the past few weeks, they are talented, bold and confident.

What is your favourite inspirational quote?
"You can paint your future on the canvas of your imagination"

2Inspire profile: Niki McGlynn founder of Niki's Organic Balms

Niki McGlynn transferred her training as a homeopath and reflexologist into the cosmetic sector by producing her own range of organic balms. She spotted a gap in the reflexology market and has never looked back. Find out what inspired her to start her brand.

Please tell us what is a typical business day for you?

I don't think that I have a very 'typical' business day, every day is very different. Most days I have either homeopathy or reflexology clients and of course each treatment is very different - I really enjoy how the therapies are very different from each other. Homeopathy is very focussed and cerebral, whereas reflexology is more instinctive. I now have two set days a week where I can concentrate on growing and developing my balm business, so they are more desk/computer focussed. I am usually at my desk by 8.30, clearing emails, clinic appointments start at 9. I enjoy the freedom of working for myself but I think fall into the trap of never actually stopping work. Social media is a great way for a small business like mine to connect with customers, so I quite often concentrate on that in the evenings, write a quick blog post or tidy up my website.

What made you start the business and how did you get started?
I started Niki's Organic Balms sort of by accident. When I qualified as a reflexologist, I struggled to find a product that I was happy to work with on my client’s feet. I didn't want to use anything petrochemical based as that went against all the principles of offering a healing treatment. Plus I didn't want to use it on my hands. Also, most feet creams are peppermint scented the smell of which I found exhausting to use all day. In addition, a lot of my clients were coming in with very cracked heels because of wearing flip flops in the summer. I was therefore giving them a blend of hypericum and calendula tincture and suggesting they mix it with olive oil at home and soak their feet – resulting in the crack going. I was also offering a lot of short taster treatments at school events in order to build my practice. I was worried about the condition of some of the people's feet I was treating, so I decided to make my own. I started off by using hypericum and calendula oil to deal with cracks and Tea Tree Oil to deal with any nasties on people's feet. Unfortunately the smell wasn't great (unless you like Tea Tree) so I added in the Lemon Tea Tree on advice from an aromatherapist friend and Original Balm was born. My clients absolutely loved it and wanted to buy some, so I started making extra for them. Once I realised I would have to charge for it, I got it licensed, once I had spent money on that I wondered if it would have a wider appeal - it has grown ever since then.
What would you say has been your greatest accomplishment in the business world to date?
I think that the recognition from organisations such as the FreeFrom Skincare Awards and The Green Parent. To be competing against large companies and still winning an award or even being shortlisted reinforces that I am doing something right.

What has been your biggest challenge in business so far?

Keeping going in the current financial climate, cash flow is hard - people are much less willing to take a risk with a relatively unknown product. However I do find that I have the absolute best customers. They are as loyal and as passionate about it as I am. I get such amazing feedback that I would say they are my inspiration.

What are your future plans for the business?

I have other products that I would like to bring to market, a men’s range including shaving oil, as well as other products that blend health and beauty.

If you had to do it all over again, what would you do differently?

Gosh, that is a hard question. This whole business has been such a journey, and when I have got it wrong, I have learnt so much. If I had done it differently, I probably wouldn't be still doing it!

Why is it so important to inspire young women in particular to follow their dreams?

The world is changing and particularly the world of business. When I talk to some of my therapy clients who are so unhappy in their lives and their jobs, I often ask them what their dream was - most of them have grown up in a time when chasing your dream was considered nonsense. Now things are different, there is a lot more collaboration and help, particularly for women and if you are running your own business there is no glass ceiling.
What advice would you give to somebody who wants to start a business in your industry?

Do your research, get some help, there is a lot out there. Be determined and be focussed.

What or who inspires you in business and why?

Rachel Elnaugh is a huge inspiration, she runs mentoring for small business with an esoteric edge. I came across her on twitter one Christmas when she was doing a pop quiz on musicals, I won some mentoring and have been with her ever since. She is very good at getting to the very root of what needs to be done. I am very inspired by people who are good at getting things done Shaa Wasmund, Mark Attwood and Jo Cameron are all people who spring to mind, in that spirit of collaboration and dynamism.
