2Inspire Business Profile: Couture Hats

In this inspirational interview we meet Beth Hirst, Founder of "Couture Hats" a bespoke couture hat label. From working for a Stockbroking company to taking a millinery course be inspired by Beth's journey to success.
Beth Hirst

Please tell us what is a typical business day for you?
My morning usually starts by getting my little girl ready for school, while she has breakfast I check and reply to emails. I drop her off at school and then head to the studio (2 mins from her school). Once there I check if I have appointments or a purely making day, depending on what orders I have in the day it will involve blocking a hat (stretching the material – felt, sinamay, straw over a wooden form of the shape require), preparing the piece for trimming adding wires for strength, headband inside. Trimming the hat can involve feathers, pieces of the original material, beading. All my hats are made to a couture level so all stitching is done by hand so you will not see the stitches.
Other things I do on a regular basis include dyeing materials to colour match with customers outfits, ordering/sourcing materials and photographing pieces to put online.
Every day is different as I rarely make the same piece twice.

What made you start the business and how did you get started?
I took a career break after I had my little girl; I was working at stockbrokers running a team of telephone dealers. I knew I wanted to do something more creative and had done an evening course whilst working in photography, silver jewellery. I went looking for a silver jewellery course online and came across the millinery course – I had no idea you could study just millinery. I had made my own fascinator when Royal Ascot came to York in 2005 as I couldn’t find one to match my outfit. I found the course on a Tuesday; the open day was that Thursday. I went along and fell in love with the course and tutor and that was it! One day a week for two years retraining. Towards the end of the second year (Jan 2009) I set up my business and began working on my kitchen table.

What would you say has been your greatest accomplishment in the business world to date?
Moving into my studio last September, I went from my kitchen table to converting my garage to a workspace to now sharing a floor of an early 19th Century woollen mill with a wedding dress designer. To have my own creative space is amazing and it is such a beautiful place to work.
Other highlights include being chosen final 6 of a national competition which was judged at Royal Ascot, my hats being featured in several national magazines including OK magazine.

What has been your biggest challenge in business so far?

Building my business up without spending a fortune on advertising, I get most of my work from recommendations, it is easy to think that if you advertise, the orders will come flocking in but a hat/headpiece is such a personal thing that it is not that easy.

What are your future plans for the business?

Now I have the space I intend to start running short courses and also look at taking on an intern/work experience person to pass on the skills as there are not many places you can train anymore.
To carry on growing my business and carry on enjoying it

If you had to do it all over again, what would you do differently?

I am not sure I would do it differently in theory it would have been nice to start down this career path at a younger age but I am not sure I could have made it work as well as it is has now. I think working in different industries gives you grounding and an idea on how
business works. Being self-employed is hard work as everything falls on you to do and you need to be very driven

Why is it so important to inspire young women in particular to follow their dreams?

I think young women are not always pushed to look at starting businesses as the young men are. It is important to show you can balance having a family, home life and run a business, it is by no means easy but that makes it feel all the better when it works.
Showing them they can do what they want and that not everything will make you a rich but if you can make a living out of it and it makes you happy then that should be the goal. Too much emphasis is put on working to be rich, when it should be about working to enjoy life – if you don’t like something be brave enough to change it! It may not always work but if you don’t do it you will never know.

What advice would you give to somebody who wants to start a business in your industry?

To work in this industry you have to love what you do, it is not something you can do just for the money. It takes time and effort to create the pieces which look effortless and unless you love doing it, it won’t work.
When I started out I did a lot of work which was not necessarily paid for TF photo-shoots (time for prints), helping out at events etc. which helped get my name out there. It is hard work and you have to shout about what you do as no one will do it for you

What or who inspires you in business and why?

I get inspired looking at historical millinery and how shapes have change, it inspires me to push myself and challenge myself to push boundaries – I recently made a hat out of bin bags as part of exhibition at Stockport Hat museum on re-designing fashion using unusual materials.
Jacqueline Gold owner of Ann Summers, has worked hard to develop her business and now supports other women in business with her weekly WOW awards on twitter in which she picks 3 businesses a week to promote – I got this back in 2010

What is your favourite inspirational quote?
I have 2!
Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life – Frank Tyger
I never dreamed of success I worked for it – Estee Lauder

2Inspire Business Profile: Fresh Therapies - The UK's First Natural Nail Polish Remover

In this business profile The 2Inspire Network meets Nicola Dickinson the founder of Fresh Therapies Ltd, the first UK-Made natural nail polish remover. We were so excited to meet Nicola and find out about her business, we hope you enjoy this interview.

Please tell us what is a typical business day for you?
I work in my home run salon from Wednesday to Friday.  But when I’m not doing treatments the rest of the time is spent working on my product business.
I’m usually at my desk by 7.30am.  That’s not too difficult as I work from home. I try to keep all meetings to Mondays & Tuesdays.
I usually make a To Do List the night before.
Fullfilling orders gets done first.  Then I’m onto my email list, phone calls and researching for new clients.  I keep an eye on Twitter throughout the day too, as I gain many contacts from here.
My monthly goal planner board is kept a check on every day too.
After some family time at evening meal I’m back at the desk keeping people updated on my business Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn pages.
Then start again with the next day’s To Do List.

What made you start the business and how did you get started?
I wanted to use a natural nail polish remover in my treatments in my home run salon and I couldn’t find one.  So I decided that I would find a company to make one for me.
I approached Business Link and had a chat with them regarding the next steps to take and started my research. Once I found a company that could help with making my formula the company had got it’s legs and was off.

What would you say has been your greatest accomplishment in the business world to date?
Being able to say that my product is the first one to be made in the UK

What has been your biggest challenge in business so far?
Having to find a new manufacturer within the UK before my stock ran out. After my first manufacturers took a different direction.  This took me three months

What are your future plans for the business?
The goal is to have a complete hand, foot and body care range within 5 years.  With more of an international and department store  presence.

If you had to do it all over again, what would you do differently?
I would have done a more indepth business plan. Made my goals more defined and asked a lot more questions of the people I was working with in certain project areas. Don’t be scared of people saying no.

Why is it so important to inspire young women in particular to follow their dreams?
You’re only young once, you really have to make it count.  Don’t get to a stage in your life and have to think If Only or What If. It’s your dream and no one can or will live it for you.  Do what makes you happy and everything else fits in.

What advice would you give to somebody who wants to start a business in your industry?
Research, Research and Research.  Get as much training and experience as you can. Always ask questions and choose one or two people not family who you can confide in.  You need to off load with someone you can trust 100%

What or who inspires you in business and why?

People who walk their talk, and those that really show passion for what they do and are willing to share and give back.

What is your favourite inspirational quote?
Feel the fear and do it anyway.  The title of the great book by Susan Jeffers

2 Inspire Business Profile: Cezanne Poetess

Cezanne Poetess is a Self-taught Visual & Spoken Word Artist, and Author of the Self-help novel ‘Single, Spiritual...AND Sexual!’ which features her artwork and poetry. Her work is a creative expression of her spiritual journey. Cezanne exhibited her artwork and performed some of her poetry at the "Celebrating the creativity of women" Ladies day in March.

Please tell us what is a typical business day for you?

I typically wake up around 4am and after doing a short meditation, will start work, which will generally be writing.  I do a lot more writing than artwork!  By 11am I’m normally finished working, although if I’m doing online promotions, I’ll do it around lunchtime, evenings or weekends. My days vary greatly; sometimes I go to the park first thing in the morning before starting any work.  If I have meetings to attend, I’ll normally have them in the afternoon, and by 6pm my working day is normally complete, unless I’m out performing! (in which case, I’ll have a nap in the afternoon!)

What made you start the business and how did you get started?

I have a passion for ‘my people’, and wanted to create products that would have a positive effect on their psyche.  There are so many negative images out there, which cause us to think and act in ways contrary to our true nature.  My work is to re-mind us of who we are through my books, art and poetry.

I’ve been told that if I just target my products to Black people, I won’t make much money, but I have a strong conviction about who my target market is, and why I create my products.

It’s been a long uphill struggle; I wrote my first business plan in 2001 but I’m only just beginning to start trading!  I did the paintings between 2009/10, wrote and recorded the poetry between 2004/10, and wrote my Self-help novel ‘Single, Spiritual...AND Sexual!’ between 2010/12.  It was only during the process of writing the novel that I realised my artwork and poetry could be used to illustrate the story!  All my work is finally coming together!  (That’s the beauty of being led by the Spirit)

What would you say has been your greatest accomplishment in the business world to date?

I would have to say publishing my first book.  That was such a great achievement for me as I have written numerous books before, but never published them!  I have yet to give it an ISBN number to make it official, but its available from Lulu as a paperback, and from Amazon as e-books.

What has been your biggest challenge in business so far?

As with most small businesses, raising finance has been my biggest challenge.  But I have managed to publish my book with no capital, set up my websites for very little money, and most of the marketing and promotions I’ve done so far have been free.  Once I’m receiving regular income from the sales of my products, I’ll be able to take my business to the next level.

What are your future plans for the business?

My goal is to expand the range of inspirational Black greeting cards and prints using artwork and poetry from other ‘artisans’ of African descent (skilled craftspeople who make things by hand). I’m also starting a monthly Cultural Arts & Crafts Fair where we (the artisans) will be able to showcase our work, and which will be a one-stop-shop for the public to buy quality handmade African-inspired products.

I will also be performing my poetry and selling my products at various Events, for details visit: http://wp.me/P2oJPB-km

If you had to do it all over again, what would you do differently?

I’d probably go to University to study Business Management!  Being a creative person, that side of the business doesn’t interest me much.  Now ideally, I’d have a business partner who could deal that side of things so I can carry on doing what I do best – creating!

Why is it so important to inspire young women in particular to follow their dreams?

I decided to start my own business after the birth of my second son, as I wanted to work around them.  Once you have children, your priority is no longer with your boss, but your children.  Owning your own business gives you the flexibility to work hours that suits you, and you don’t have to ask anyone for time off to go see your child’s school play!

Many women are now putting off starting a family while building their ‘career’, only to realise that they may have left it too late.

Being able to work from home should be every woman’s dream!

What advice would you give to somebody who wants to start a business in your industry?

Do as much research on the industry as possible before starting your business; ideally, work for a business that is already set up doing what you want to do!  This way, you’ll gain valuable experience and avoid making costly mistakes.  Start off small and build up, don’t give yourself unnecessary stress by taking out too many overheads before you know how much money you’ll actually be making.

What or who inspires you in business and why?

I love the ‘rags to riches’ stories of people who had little education, little money, but who have defied the odds, started their own business and are now Self-made millionaires! (that’s my goal!)

What is your favourite inspirational quote?

“Whatever the mind can conceive it can achieve – I can CREATE whatever I can IMAGINE!”
