Miranda Brawn is an award winning business and diversity leader. Named one of the Top 30 most inspirational women by Brummel, featured in CityAM’s WomenInTheCity Powerlist, BE Mogul Winner and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
Miranda drives companies to achieve strong financial performance and public engagement, built upon her extensive experience working for some of the world’s biggest companies.  With a background as an investment banker and a barrister, over 15 years’ experience in philanthropy and diversity work, Miranda wanted to go the extra mile and founded the Miranda Brawn Diversity Leadership Foundation. This provides future BAME leaders with opportunities and incentives. She has recently partnered with The Prince’s Trust to provide one of her scholarships to a young BAME person from the Trust. The aim is to help increase race diversity and equality in Britain.
She has co-founded General Counsel Diversity Leadership Forum and Color In Tech to help increase race and gender diversity. She is on the committee board for City Women Network that helps to increase gender diversity. She is also part of the Thomson Reuters Legal In-House Advisory Network and Business Law Consultation Advisory Board. Miranda is on the board as Vice Chair of the Black Cultural Archives, Patron of the Black British Academics and board adviser for other organisations. Read our inspirational interview with her and be motivated to live your best life too!

Please tell us what is a typical business day for you? I do not have a typical business day. It varies on a day to day basis. It may include board meetings, drafting and negotiating legal agreements, mentoring, networking events, photo shoots, commentary on television, public speaking plus much more.

What made you start the business and how did you get started? With over 15 years’ experience in diversity, philanthropy and community work, I wanted to go the extra mile and launch the ‘Miranda Brawn Diversity Leadership Foundation’. This is to provide the next generation of Black, Asian and minority ethnics (BAME) future leaders with incentives and opportunities via scholarships, work experience, lectures and mentoring/coaching programmes. The aim is to help increase race diversity and equality in Britain and beyond.  There will also be a tailored scholarship in association with the Prince’s Trust to help young BAME people from disadvantaged backgrounds get into jobs, education and training.  The scholarships will be awarded at the Miranda Brawn Diversity Leadership Annual Lecture where Dame Jocelyn Barrow will deliver a keynote address prior to my diversity leadership lecture.  Further information can be located via

What would you say has been your greatest accomplishment in the business world to date?  My greatest accomplishment is being in a position to be able to give back to society in many ways which include the Miranda Brawn Diversity Leadership Foundation.

What has been your biggest challenge in business so far? There have been many challenges however one has been underestimation. If others underestimate me or lower their expectations because I am a woman of colour, that just means they are all that more disadvantaged or ill-prepared when they inevitably see and experience how much more capable I am than them. If some people correlate low expectations with me because I am a woman, there is no question that I will over-deliver, and that is always highly satisfying.

What are your future plans for the business? I would like to expand on a global level.

If you had to do it all over again, what would you do differently? I would have started at an earlier age.

Why is it so important to inspire young women in particular to follow their dreams? I think it is very important for young women to be inspired and see successful females following their dreams to help them achieve their own.  After my motivational talks, it is highly refreshing to see young women believe they can really do anything that they set their minds to.

What advice would you give to somebody who wants to start a business in your industry? BE SAFE!

Believe in yourself and exercise confidence.
Exercise persistence and determination when things take longer than expected.
Sky is the limit so aim high.
Authenticity is important for relationship building and leadership.
Focus on your own goals.
Expose yourself to your comfort zone challenges.

What or who inspires you in business and why?  I am inspired by those who rise above their challenges like a phoenix through strength, determination and courage to reach a successful place.

What is your favourite inspirational quote? This is a tough question because I have so many favourite inspirational quotes. That said, one that comes straight to my mind is Napoleon Hill’s “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”

2Inspire Inspirational Woman: Luxury Footwear Designer & Entrepreneur Lucy Choi

Lucy Choi is the niece of renowned shoe designer Jimmy Choo and is a successful luxury footwear designer and entrepreneur with an inspirational story. Read about her business journey and be inspired!

Please tell us what is a typical business day for you?

Busy! I love the challenge and no day is the same.  I start each day with a long shower (well, 10 minutes!) and some ‘me time’ – it’s where I get that moment to stop, think, and plan.  I need order and routine, so that if things don’t always go exactly to plan, I can fix things or work around it. I am involved in every aspect of the business from the creative side, liaising with my factories, to looking after the budgets, forecasting, recruitment, sales, events, logistics, marketing and PR.  One day I could be meeting with buyers, or with press talking about the new collection, and the next I could be in Hong Kong, Spain or Italy overseeing the production.

What made you start the business and how did you get started?

After building up over 8 years of important experience in the business and financial world and over 14 years in the fashion world, I felt I then had enough all round business experience and skills to launch my own business in 2012, spotting a gap in the market for stylish and luxurious, but also comfortable and affordable, shoes for all occasions, and for women of all ages and tastes. Inspired by my uncle Jimmy Choo, and with this business and fashion experience under my belt, I finally had the confidence I needed to start my own collection. I established an ethos from the very beginning to provide affordable luxury and what I like to call the 3 Cs: Comfort, Craftsmanship and Character. This initial USP gave me a solid foundation to build my business from, creating beautiful shoes for a savvy generation of women who want competitive prices and the wow factor in what they are wearing! After four years establishing the brand, selling online and to wholesalers including Harvey Nichols, Fenwick and Sachs Fifth Avenue to name a few, I opened my flagship store in Connaught Village last August. It has been a huge success so far and I am really looking forward to expanding further, with lots of exciting projects coming up this year!

What would you say has been your greatest accomplishment in the business world to date?

It’s hard to choose! Seeing my very first collection go straight into Harvey Nichols stores was a career highlight, and opening our first boutique in London in Autumn last year was really a dream come true.

What has been your biggest challenge in business so far?

Learning to take risks in business is a huge challenge, but it is so important and drives you to success. Equally, success does not magically happen overnight and you need to put the hours in. I have taken a lot of risks throughout my career, investing my own money in the business and even selling my flat I had owned for 10 years to launch Lucy Choi London. This was of course very daunting, but it has really driven me to make my business a success. You have to put your money where your mouth is in business, throw everything you’ve got at something, and overcome any fears of failure. For me it’s all or nothing. If you visualize your goal and believe in it, everything and anything is possible. I think because I have invested so much into my business, it means more to me and seems so much more real. I faced a huge challenge in my career when I launched my label in 2012 and also gave birth to my first child all in the same year, but it paid off and has driven me to continue going all out in everything I do! This past year I have been pregnant with my second son and opened my first boutique! I’ve definitely learnt how to become more efficient and work on less sleep!

What are your future plans for the business?

I’m always looking to expand the brand’s global presence. I went to USA last year to meet with buyers there, as I would love to expand across the pond.  Now we have our first London store, I would also love to open some more boutiques in the UK too – so watch this space!

If you had to do it all over again, what would you do differently?

I honestly don’t think I would do anything differently. That is not to say I haven’t made some mistakes along the way, but that’s how I believe you learn, grow and develop. There will always be set backs, that’s just life but its how you handle those challenges and learn from them which is important.

Why is it so important to inspire young women in particular to follow their dreams?

I think it is extremely important to empower young women and ensure they
follow their dreams whatever they may be, because if you are hungry enough for success you can achieve anything you want; if you visualize and believe in your dreams, work hard and are driven, they really can materialize. We all need to start somewhere and I am really passionate about education and nurturing young talent, whatever the gender. I believe that education opens your mind and your eyes.  I think all companies should provide proper work experience; it’s where you can learn such valuable life skills and can decide on the right career path for yourself.  I’m a strong believer in work experience to obtain valuable, practical experience in an industry, and so we run an intern programme here at Lucy Choi London. Personally, I learnt my most valuable lessons from watching my uncle at work when I was young, especially his strong work ethic and values.  As the boss of my own company, I have the chance to pass on valuable experience and skills to my team and interns, who can get a first hand experience of working in the fashion industry. I really appreciate the fact that I can give back to interns the experience that I have so fortunately gained myself.

What advice would you give to somebody who wants to start a business in your industry?

Believe in your vision. Make sure you have a solid business plan and stick to it! Or if you’re not naturally business savvy, make sure you’ve got a team that can support you. Be prepared to work hard, as success doesn’t magically happen overnight. Don’t sweat the small stuff, as there will always be challenges along the way. And whatever happens don’t give up on your dreams, only you can make them happen.

What or who inspires you in business and why?

My uncle Jimmy and his amazing work ethic has always inspired me, teaching me such valuable lessons to stay happy and positive, to aspire, and to always deliver my promises. I am also very inspired by other female entrepreneurs like Natalie Massenet and Jo Malone. I regularly brainstorm new ideas and designs with my team in the office, and when I’m away from work my husband constantly inspires me – he is such wonderful support and I can always bounce ideas off him.

What is your favourite inspirational quote?

“Keep your heels, head & standards high.” – Coco Chanel

2inspire Inspirational Woman: Ronke Adeyemi, Editor of BrownBeautyTalk.com

Ronke Adeyemi is an esteemed journalist, lifestyle & beauty blogger and marketing expert whose years of experience inspired her to develop the successful website, dedicated to women of colour, BrownBeautyTalk.com. Read our interview with her and learn more about her incredible journey.

Please tell us what is a typical business day for you?
Wake up, grab my phone check emails, social media etc. Listen to the radio to get the morning news, shower, have breakfast. My day depends on what meetings and events I have scheduled. If I am at home I work on content in my home office or in a local cafe. I write posts, schedule posts, commission, request interviews and images from PRs. I also schedule a lot of the social media too. If I am out at events I work on the go. I tend to have meetings with PRs and press days to attend.

What made you start the business and how did you get started?
I saw a gap in the market for beauty for a platform for Women of Colour and decided to make it happen. We started with the Twitter discussion and then the natural progression was the website. It has been a really exciting journey.

What would you say has been your greatest accomplishment in the business world to date?
Keeping up the consistency of the brand. It is something people often comment on; we publish our posts three times a day and the Twitter discussion always starts at 8pm every Sunday. Reliability is something that as a brand we pride ourselves on.

What has been your biggest challenge in business so far?
Getting to grips with all the techie stuff. I had to learn how to design a website from scratch. Also keeping up to date with new social media platforms such as SnapChat and Periscope.

What are your future plans for the business?
To extend the brand, I have quite a few plans which I am working on at the moment.

If you had to do it all over again, what would you do differently?
Make sure I have a three year plan with some serious investment behind me. There are so many avenues that I could go down with for brownbeautytalk but they obviously require a lot of funding.

Why is it so important to inspire young women in particular to follow their dreams?
This type of inspiration will encourage them to never give up and follow their gut instinct.
It will also allow them to ignore the negative people.

What advice would you give to somebody who wants to start a business in your industry?
Find a niche - a USP that makes your brand stand out and network, It really is about who you know.

What is your favourite inspirational quote?
Just Do It!

2Inspire Inspirational Woman: Danielle Scott-Haughton, Founder of WONDERLONDON FILMS

In this interview we profile the inspirational Founder of WONDERLONDON FILMS, Danielle Scott-Haughton, whose web series include Dear Jesus and The Alexis Show. Her shows have not only been a huge hit online but have also shown that you can do anything you put your mind to. Read on and be inspired by this amazing woman.

Please tell us what is a typical business day for you?
I currently work full time at a television post production facility and run WONDERLONDON FILMS as a side hustle. Currently as we are on hiatus from production on Dear Jesus and The Alexis Show I currently spend the evenings writing.

What made you start the business and how did you get started?
After opportunities to work in film production fell through I decided to make create my own and started WONDERLONDON FILMS in 2011. I bought a camera and just got on with it.

What would you say has been your greatest accomplishment in the business world to date?
My greatest accomplishment has been winning Favourite Web Series at the Screen Nation Digital-Is Awards in 2015. It meant that my work was recognised not only by the organisers of the event but that social media supported us too.

What has been your biggest challenge in business so far?
Securing funding.

What are your future plans for the business?
Currently I plan to rebrand WONDERLONDON FILMS was a poor choice as we are often confused with Wonderland Films and more recently Wondervision Films.

If you had to do it all over again, what would you do differently?
Just have more patience, understand that Rome wasn’t build in a day. Not run into long term financial decisions with short term understanding and trust my instincts. They’re never wrong.

Why is it so important to inspire young women in particular to follow their dreams?
Women are powerful when they have the tools and the access to achieve their goals, the key to the future of our planet’s survival might be in the mind of a young woman who doesn’t have the opportunity to do what she was put here to do. We must inspire young women because equality hasn’t been achieved yet and we need more women to show why we are important and why we matter.

What advice would you give to somebody who wants to start a business in your industry?
Make sure you understand your USP. What is special about you? Why is your company important? That way when things get hard and you face challenges, you wont be deterred, you’ll find solutions and keep going because you know you matter and your industry needs you because there is no one else who does what you do the way that you do it.

What or who inspires you in business and why?
Shonda Rhimes. She runs a production company and she owns Thursday nights on ABC. I look up to her. I love what she represents, a powerful black woman who understands why representation is important and is a doer, not a talker alone; making sure that nearly everyone can watch her shows and see someone who looks like them.

What is your favourite inspirational quote?
“God didn’t call you to be busy, He called you to be effective.” – Joyce Meyer
